Our Story

Our Story

A Community Rooted in
Faith & Heritage

The Portuguese Muslim Community Leicester (PMCL) was born from a deep desire to preserve and celebrate the unique identity of Portuguese-speaking Muslims who have made Leicester their home.

Our community traces its roots to the rich Muslim heritage of Mozambique and Portugal — a legacy shaped by centuries of Islamic tradition, colonial history, and resilient faith. When families arrived in Leicester, they brought with them their language, their culture, and their devotion.

What began as informal gatherings — sharing meals, prayers and memories — grew organically into a recognised community. Through social media, word of mouth, and the warmth of shared identity, PMCL became a vital home for those who speak Portuguese and live by Islamic values in the heart of England.

Our Journey

A Timeline of Community

Pre-2010s

Roots in Mozambique & Portugal

Portuguese-speaking Muslim families began settling in Leicester, carrying with them a rich Islamic heritage from Mozambique and Portugal — language, culture and faith woven together across continents.

2012

First Gatherings

Small informal meet-ups started in Leicester homes. Families connected over shared food, prayers and the Portuguese language, recognising the need for a formal community space.

2013

Facebook Community Launched

The PMCL Facebook page (@pmcleicester) was created, giving the community a digital home. It quickly became the go-to space to share news, announce events and welcome new members to the group.

2015

Community Meals Begin

Regular community meals (jantares) became a cornerstone of PMCL life — bringing together members old and new, celebrating Eid, Ramadan and cultural festivals with traditional Portuguese-Mozambican cuisine.

2018

Growing Membership

The community expanded significantly, with more families joining from across Leicester and the Midlands. Structured membership was introduced, along with a committee to coordinate events and welfare support.

2020–2022

Resilience Through Adversity

Despite the challenges of the pandemic, PMCL kept its community connected through online gatherings, welfare check-ins and virtual celebrations — demonstrating the depth of its bonds.

Today

A Thriving Community

PMCL is a fully established, registered community in Leicester — running regular events, supporting members, and proudly representing Portuguese-speaking Muslims in the UK. Our story continues.
